The world's largest pure electric ferry will be officially put into operation

The world's largest pure electric ferry "Ellen" recently completed its first flight in Denmark and is expected to be fully operational in the coming weeks. This is the world's first battery-powered ferry that provides enough energy for day-to-day operations and emergencies.

The "Ellen" can carry about 30 cars and 200 passengers. It can last for 22 nautical miles (about 40.7 kilometers) when fully charged. On August 15th, the “Ellen” began its first commercial voyage through the waters between the islands of Soby and Fynshav on the islands of Ayr and Als in the south of Denmark.

The "Ellen" is owned and managed by Ayr Island, built by Soby Vaerft, delivered in July this year, with a Danish flag and classified as DNV GL. This is part of the Danish Natura project, which aims to provide environmentally friendly transportation to local residents. The Natura project was launched in 2015 and is funded by the European Commission's €80 billion “Horizon 2020” research and innovation program.

"Ellen" is nearly 60 meters in length, about 13 meters wide, and has a speed of 13-15.5 knots. It can carry 198 passengers in summer and 147 passengers in winter. It has an ice-class 1C reinforcement symbol. The ship's weather deck can also carry 31 cars or 5 trucks. To reduce weight, the passenger area of the ship is at the same level as the car deck. The bridge is made of aluminum instead of steel, and the furniture on the ship is made of recycled paper instead of wood.

The 4.3MWh battery system on the "Ellen" is supplied by Leclanche, Switzerland, and features a high-energy G-NMC lithium-ion battery with unique safety features, including a two-layer laminate design and ceramic separator. The battery system is divided into 20 units, each connected to a separate converter that controls the energy output.

This is the largest capacity battery pack currently installed for marine use and the first electric ferry that is not equipped with an emergency backup generator. By using a battery system, the ship can reduce emissions of 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide, 42 tons of nitrogen oxides, 2.5 tons of particulate matter and 1.4 tons of sulfur dioxide per year.

In addition to the battery system, Leclanche also designed the marine rack system for the "Ellen", including fire and fire suppression systems. Leilanche CEO Anil Srivastava said that the "Ellen" is "a pioneer in the new era of commercial shipping," and represents a "new milestone in the advancement of commercial ships."

At the same time, Danfoss Editron offers an all-electric drive system for the "Ellen". The company's EDITRON system is equipped with two 750kW propulsion motors and two 250kW propulsion motors, both of which use permanent magnet synchronous reluctance assist technology and are controlled by DC/AC inverters.

In addition to the electric drive system, Danfoss Editron also supplies the "Ellen" power management system for overall automatic power and load control on board. In addition, the company offers onshore charging stations and charging stations for the "Ellen" 4.3MWh battery system.
