In London, drivers believe there are only 100 to 200 charging points available. Berlin-based Ubitricity has converted street lights into charging points since 2015, and has now installed about 1,300 charging facilities across London with project partner Siemens.
The technology has been installed in existing lampposts and uses already available infrastructure, so there is no need to dig roads to lay new cables. EV users plug the SmartCable into a street light bar and connect the other end to the car, allowing EVs and plug-in hybrids to charge overnight on streets without lanes or garages. The meter box inside the cable records how many kilowatt hours were used and charges customers accordingly.
There are currently 296 street lamp charging points in use in Westminster, but it is reported that Sutherland Boulevard is the first fully converted residential avenue in the UK. Two adjacent roads will also change over the next few weeks. The city council hopes to build a thousand such charging stations in central London within the next year.
